Understanding CBD, CBG, CBN & CBC
A Patient-Friendly Guide to Cannabinoids
What Is the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a communication network in your body that helps regulate pain, mood, sleep, inflammation, immune balance, and overall wellness. It includes CB1 receptors (primarily in the brain and nervous system), CB2 receptors (primarily in immune tissues), and natural endocannabinoids produced by your body. Plant cannabinoids from hemp help support and balance this system.
CBD (Cannabidiol) – Calm & Inflammation Support
Potential Benefits:
• Helps reduce anxiety and stress
• Supports pain relief (joint, muscle, nerve discomfort)
• Reduces inflammation
• May improve sleep quality
• Supports nervous system balance
CBD does not cause intoxication or a ‘high.’
CBG (Cannabigerol) – Focus & Gut Support
Potential Benefits:
• May reduce inflammation
• Supports gut health
• May improve focus and mental clarity
• Neuroprotective potential
• May support bladder function
CBG is often described as mildly energizing and helpful for daytime use.
CBN (Cannabinol) – Sleep Support
Potential Benefits:
• Promotes relaxation
• May support deeper sleep
• Mild pain relief
• Calms an overactive nervous system
CBN is commonly used for insomnia and nighttime anxiety.
CBC (Cannabichromene) – Mood & Inflammation Support
Potential Benefits:
• Supports inflammation reduction
• May support mood balance
• Works synergistically with CBD
• May support skin health
• Neuroprotective potential
CBC does not cause intoxication.
Why Use a Combination?
Many patients benefit from broad-spectrum formulas that include multiple cannabinoids. This is called the ‘entourage effect,’ meaning cannabinoids often work better together than alone.
Examples:
• CBD + CBG: Daytime pain and inflammation support
• CBD + CBN: Sleep support
• CBD + CBC: Enhanced anti-inflammatory effects
Safety Considerations
Hemp-derived cannabinoids are generally well tolerated. Possible mild side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness (especially with CBN), and mild digestive upset.
Consult your healthcare provider if you take blood thinners, seizure medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have liver concerns.
