Neck Pain Relief

Non-surgical solutions for neck pain and mobility restoration in Virginia Beach.

At the Barr Center, our approach to neck pain relief begins and ends with our patients.

At the Barr Center, we are trained to assess how your core muscles are functioning and whether you may be stuck in a dysfunctional breathing pattern contributing to neck and back pain. This is commonly referred to as a reverse breathing pattern.

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders in adults. The neck supports the head and allows movement in all directions. Neck muscles and ligaments must be strong enough to support the head while remaining flexible to allow motion. Studies estimate that neck pain affects up to 20 percent of the population and can significantly impact physical, social, and mental well-being.

Neck pain can be caused by multiple factors, including ergonomic stressors such as repetitive movement, poor posture, vibration, or forceful activity. Individual factors like age, body mass index, genetics, and prior musculoskeletal injury also play a role. Behavioral factors such as smoking and physical inactivity, along with psychosocial factors like stress, anxiety, depression, and job dissatisfaction, may contribute as well.

Neck Pain Diagnosis

There are diagnostic only injection used to determine which degenerated, inflamed, arthritic, or traumatized joints are causing your pain. These injections are very helpful in determining effective longer lasting treatment strategies. Medical branch blocks are performed to assess Neck or Low Back pain.

If you respond well to these injections, we may recommend facet joint injection, radiofrequency ablation or PRP injection. It is important to know that insurance rules for pain management procedures are everchanging.

For most insurance, we must obtain insurance authorization prior to the procedure. We can certainly help you understand how these rules apply to you.

The medication used with medical branch blocks consist of Lidocaine & Marcaine which can yield up to 8 hours of temporary relief. During this testing period, you will need to complete a post block pain diary.

Neck pain commonly develops from muscle imbalances, trigger points, muscle tension, and poor posture. Prolonged desk work or looking down at phones and tablets can strain the neck muscles. Chronic stress and dysfunctional breathing patterns can also overload neck muscles, which are meant to assist breathing rather than drive it.

Pain may originate from the neck itself or from surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Degenerative changes related to aging can also affect the discs and joints of the cervical spine.

To diagnose the cause of your neck pain, your physician will review your symptom history and perform a thorough examination, including:

  • The location, intensity, duration, and radiation of pain
  • Any prior injury to the neck
  • Movements or positions that worsen or relieve symptoms
  • Range of motion and posture assessment
  • Palpation to identify tenderness or trigger points
  • Evaluation of the nervous system

Additional diagnostic testing may include:

  • X-ray evaluation
  • CT scan or bone scan
  • MRI
  • Myelogram
  • Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity testing (NCV)

Most neck pain improves within a few weeks without medical intervention. Moist heat or ice and short-term pain relievers may help. Cervical collars are generally not recommended, as they can weaken muscles. Excessive reliance on pain medication is discouraged, as inflammation plays a role in healing.

If symptoms persist, your physician may recommend additional therapies. At the Barr Center, treatment focuses on restoring function while minimizing reliance on medication. Treatment options are tailored to your symptoms and history and may include:
