Regenerative Medicine

Advanced regenerative therapies for lasting pain relief and better function in Virginia Beach

Rejuvenation means boosting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Regenerative medicine holds the promise of definitive, affordable health care solutions that help the body heal from within. At the Barr Center we believe that under the right conditions the body has the capacity to heal itself. Regenerative therapies are tools we use to reduce inflammation and support healing in injured and degenerated joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Treatment and Diagnosis

Regenerative Medicine | Barr Center Regenerative medicine treatments involve injecting mostly autologous growth factors that signal healing processes in the tissues. In more than 90 percent of our patients, we support the use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate) over commercially available amniotic stem cell products. Studies and years of experience have shown excellent effectiveness in many conditions. In most cases, using your own blood products is safer and more cost effective. We will always help you explore the best option for your unique needs.

So what is the fuss about? According to the Mayo Clinic, regenerative medicine has the potential to fully heal damaged tissues and organs. While the field is not new, its applications in treating musculoskeletal disorders are evolving quickly. The central idea is to use your own cells and growth factors to amplify your natural healing response. Advances in cell biology and immunology continue to expand what is possible.

Regenerative Medicine is a Non-Surgical Treatment

There are few effective non-surgical ways to treat the root causes of many degenerative conditions and injuries. Often clinicians can only manage symptoms with medication, surgery, or devices. Regenerative therapies target signaling proteins in your blood and tissues that reduce inflammation and pain, helping you progress into a therapy program that optimizes your function.

Because these methods are newer, most are not covered by Medicare or private insurance. If this approach is right for you, we will review all costs, discuss the process, and provide an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) acknowledging that it is a non-covered service. Medicare is tracking PRP usage, but we do not know when coverage may begin.

Research has focused primarily on knee arthritis, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendon injuries. At the Barr Center, we stay current on all regenerative therapy research and clinical advances.

Regenerative Medicine Pioneer – Lisa Barr, MD

Dr. Barr and her staff have been leaders in regenerative medicine. She was the first physician in Hampton Roads to implement PRP, bone marrow-derived stem cells, and fat grafting over 20 years ago. She has treated many patients, including professional golfers, with regenerative therapies for spinal, joint, and tendon issues. Dr. Barr stays at the forefront of the field by attending international regenerative medicine conferences.

She also has advanced training in musculoskeletal ultrasound and interventional spinal injections. Precise needle placement is essential for nonsurgical regenerative therapies. After determining the best treatment plan, whether PRP, prolotherapy, prolozone therapy, bone marrow concentrate, fat grafting, amniotic stem cells, or a combination, most procedures can be performed in our office the same day.

Treatments use a small needle, cold spray, and local anesthesia. All regenerative therapies at the Barr Center are performed with ultrasound or x-ray guidance. Procedures typically take about 60 minutes, and most patients return to normal activities within 4 to 7 days.
