Knee Joint Pain Relief

Non-surgical solutions for knee joint pain and mobility restoration in Virginia Beach.

At the Barr Center, our approach to knee joint pain relief begins and ends with our patients. The knee is the largest joint in the body and consists of three compartments that work together as a modified hinge joint, allowing bending and rotational movement. The knee enables walking, running, climbing, squatting, lifting, and carrying.

Injuries and degeneration from wear and tear can affect any of these compartments, leading to ligament and tendon strain, inflammation, swelling, cartilage tears, arthritis, and bursitis. Knee pain can significantly limit everyday activities such as walking, stair climbing, kneeling, turning, and exercise. Many patients seek care because knee pain prevents them from maintaining an active lifestyle due to injury, degeneration, or medical conditions.

Our treatments focus on restoring your ability to live a healthy, active life. This begins with identifying the source of your pain and addressing primary pain generators, followed by evaluating compensatory issues that develop in response to pain.

Knee Joint Pain Diagnosis

Knee pain commonly develops from everyday wear and tear, overuse, injury, or aging. Pain may originate from the knee joint itself or surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Pain related to joint compartments or associated structures typically worsens with activity. Night pain with tenderness below the knee on the inner leg is often associated with pes anserine bursitis.

Instability from trauma or hypermobility syndromes can also contribute to knee pain, making diagnosis and treatment complex.

In some cases, knee pain does not originate from the knee itself. Osteoarthritis of the hip or lumbar spine conditions, particularly at the L4 level, can refer pain to the knee.

During your first appointment, we will review your symptoms, medical history, and contributing factors. A physical exam and imaging studies such as X-rays or diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound may be used to reach an accurate diagnosis.
