The word is derived from the Greek words spondylos, which means \u201cspine\u201d or \u201cvertebra,\u201d and\u202f<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listhesis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means \u201cto slip or slide.\u201d If the vertebra slips too far forward, it can cause pain and nerve damage. Spondylolisthesis may vary from mild to severe. This occurs in 3-5% of the US population. As a result the fifth lumbar vertebra may slip forward on the sacrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In adults, the slip is most frequently between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. Common causes can be related to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Degenerative diseases, such as arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traumatic fractures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are symptoms of arthritis of the lumbar spine (spondylolisthesis)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the lower back, thighs, and buttocks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiffness in the back<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenderness in the slipped area<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurological damage (leg weakness or changes in sensation) may result from pressure on nerve roots and may cause pain radiating down the legs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Localized tenderness over the spine just above the pelvis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients may not exhibit any symptoms with spondylolisthesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How is spondylolisthesis diagnosed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-rays will reveal the misalignment of the vertebra, and they can also show if there are any fractures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>How is it treated?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common treatments for spondylolisthesis are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthening and stretching exercises<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modification of activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding hyperextension of the back<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding contact far back)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid weightlifting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid contact sports<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek medical attention if your child complains of back pain or stiffness, or pain in the thighs and buttocks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12118\"
