Because of the natural process of aging and spinal degeneration, the spinal canal may narrow, compressing the spinal cord and nerves in a process called central stenosis. Causes for the stenosis include:<\/span> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facet joint arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spondylolisthesis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Degenerative disc disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u202for protrusions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the symptoms?<\/h3>\n<p> <strong>Lumbar spinal stenosis:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the buttocks, thighs, and legs brought on by either prolonged standing, walking or by exercising in the erect posture<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness, tingling, and loss of deep tendon reflexes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain worsens while walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain decreases after sitting down<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain is usually less intense while you are leaning forward<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain is worse with extension of the back at the hips<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/barrcenter.com\/staging-2025\/back-pain-relief\/\">\u202fback pain<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u202fmay or may not be present<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How is spinal stenosis diagnosed?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through history and physical exam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through imaging such as MRI<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How is it treated?<\/h3>\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for spinal stenosis will vary depending on the severity of the problem.
