Physicians referring patients to the Barr Center may have their staff call to schedule the appointment for patients or fill out the online\u00a0<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Barr-Center-Patient-Referral-Form.pdf\"><strong>Patient Referral Form<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0and fax it to our office at 757-578-2261.<\/strong><\/p><h3><strong>Initial Evaluation wait time<\/strong><\/h3><p>Patients are generally scheduled within two weeks for a new evaluation.<\/p><h3><strong>Initial evaluation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><p>You will receive a welcome packet in the mail, prior to your visit, or you can download the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/barrcenter.com\/staging-2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Barr-Center-New-Patient-Packet-02072019.pdf\"><strong>New Patient Packet <\/strong><\/a>from this website.\u00a0 It is recommended that you arrive about 15 minutes prior to your initial evaluation if you have completed your paper work, and 30 minutes if you have not completed the paperwork. After your initial evaluation, your doctor will discuss with you the most effective treatment program for your problem.<\/p><h3><strong>Preparing for your first appointment<\/strong><\/h3><p>To assist in making your first visit to the Barr Center more time efficient, please bring any relevant medical records as well as:<\/p><ul><li>Photo Id<\/li><li>Insurance card<\/li><li>Any referrals from your primary care physician<\/li><li>All completed new patient paperwork<\/li><li>Co-pay, if required<\/li><\/ul><p>We will request any other medical records, MRI\u2019s, CT Scans, X-rays or laboratory results or MRI\u2019s be faxed to our office from your referring physician\u2019s office. To expedite this process you can download the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/barrcenter.com\/staging-2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Barr-Center-Medical-Records-Request-Form.pdf\"><strong>Medical Records Request Form<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>before your first visit.<\/p><h3><strong>Length of the initial evaluation<\/strong><\/h3><p>Generally, your initial evaluation takes about 60 minutes. Your physician will have to take a thorough history and review your medical records to determine what treatment is best for you.<\/p><h3><strong>Clothing to wear to the exam<\/strong><\/h3><p>You should wear comfortable clothing. Please bring shorts or sweat pants for any lower extremity problems, and women are asked to bring or wear a sports bra for shoulder problems.<\/p><h3><strong>Before your appointment<\/strong><\/h3><p>As a courtesy to our patients and staff, wearing of strong perfumes or colognes and\/or lotions should be avoided.<\/p><h3><strong>Questions about your treatment<\/strong><\/h3><p>The Barr Center recognizes that diagnoses and medical procedures can be difficult to understand. Every effort is made to simply and completely answer all questions related to treatment. The Barr Center believes that patient education is critical in the process of pain management.<\/p><h3><strong>Scheduling follow-up visits<\/strong><\/h3><p>Follow up visits are scheduled at the end of your initial evaluation. If a procedure is recommended, it may be scheduled at that time. You will be given any necessary paper work for follow up. Please note that certain insurances require pre-authorization for physical therapy and pain management procedures. It may take as long as seven to ten days for us to obtain authorization before certain services can be scheduled. We will do our best to get your procedure authorized in a timely fashion. If you are uncertain about the status of your authorization, please contact our office.<\/p><h3><strong>Ride\/drive home from appointment<\/strong><\/h3><p>Reflexes may be temporarily impaired from certain procedures or you may experience numbness, so arranging for a driver is an important safety precaution. You will be advised as to whether or not you will need to make the necessary arrangements prior to your procedure.<\/p><h3><strong>Returning to work after the exam\/procedure<\/strong><\/h3><p>Yes, in most cases. However, there are a few procedures that may require patients to miss work. You will be given more information about your procedure and what you should prepare for as well as expect.<\/p><h3><strong>Expected improvements after the procedure<\/strong><\/h3><p>The quality and length of pain relief vary from patient to patient based on the type of symptoms, how long they have been present, their origin in the body, and the procedure that is performed. Your physician will advise you on what to expect from the procedure that is to be performed.<\/p><h3><strong>Lack of pain relief after the procedure<\/strong><\/h3><p>Whether the procedure relieves your symptoms or not, your physician will gather important information about the source and nature of your pain. If there is no relief, then you physician will discuss with you what needs to be further done to determine the source of your pain.<\/p><h3><strong>Having your prescription refilled<\/strong><\/h3><p>You can call our office at 757-578-2260 for\u00a0prescription refills, Monday through Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m and on Friday between 9:00 am to noon. Please allow three (3) business days to process your request. If someone is picking up the prescription for you, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/barrcenter.com\/staging-2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Bar-Center-prescription-medication-release-form.pdf\"><strong>Authorization for Release of Prescription<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has to be completed in order for the prescription to be released.\u00a0 We cannot refill controlled substances over the phone. Medication refills must be made at the time of your scheduled appointment. This ensures that we remain in compliance with the Virginia Board of Medicine safe prescribing guidelines.<\/p><h3><strong>Obtaining a copy of your medical records<\/strong><\/h3><p>We will be happy to provide you with a copy of your medical records. You will need to fill out a copy of the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/barrcenter.com\/staging-2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Barr-Center-medical-records-release.pdf\">Medical Records Release Form<\/a><\/strong>, and return it to the office closest to you. There is a $10 retrieval fee, and a .50 per page charge. You will need to allow at least five days for us to process your request. We will fax any records to other physicians, but you will have to come to the office to sign a release for the records.<\/p><h3><strong>Health insurance pre-authorization procedure<\/strong><\/h3><p>You should check with your insurance to determine if a referral is necessary prior to receiving treatment. If your insurance requires a pre-authorization to see a specialist, then you must get a referral from a Primary Care Physician or OB\/Gyn to see a pain specialist for an initial appointment. This signal is then transmitted through the autonomic nervous system throughout your body.<\/p><p>This is why a scar in one part of your body can cause pain in another area that is not even in close proximity to the scar.<\/p><p>Interference fields have lower electrical potentials than surrounding tissue. Electrical currents will flow from areas of higher voltage to areas of lower. Because of the disruption in electrical activity due to the presence of scar tissue, mixed signals are sent through the body\u2019s nervous system. As a result, the body will react in ways that can lead to chronic pain and\/or illness.<\/p><p>Cells in interference fields have an abnormal electrical charge on the cell surface. This results in abnormal signals being sent from the nerves to the brain (abnormal afferent signals). These signals then trigger abnormal autonomic nervous system responses. Local anesthetics affects the cells by stabilizing the membrane and normalizing the electrical charge. Even if the effects last for a short time, it allows for improved cellular metabolism, creating a healthier cellular environment and helping to stabilize the system. The improved cellular metabolism allows toxins to leave the cells and nutrients to enter, thereby reducing pain.<\/p><p>The injections are done using a very fine needle directed just below the skin (subcutaneously) into scars, nerves, acupuncture points, glands and trigger points. Sometimes deep injections are performed into the ganglia (a cluster of nervous tissue) or into a plexus (a network of nerves). Regenerative therapies are a set of tools that we can use to reduce inflammation and facilitate healing in injured and degenerated joints, tendons and ligaments.<\/p><p>Dr. Barr and her staff have been at the forefront of regenerative medicine. She was the first physician to implement PRP, bone marrow-derived stem cells and fat grafting into practice in Hampton Roads over 20 years ago. She has successfully treated many patients, including professional golfers, with a variety of regenerative therapies for spinal, joint and tendon issues. Dr. Barr monitors the latest advances in regenerative medicine by regularly attending international conferences on<\/p><p>Regenerative Medicine, and she enjoys bringing back to our area the newest proven technologies. To complement her experience in regenerative medicine, she has advanced training in musculoskeletal ultrasound and interventional spinal injections. This is a key component to our success since these are mostly non-surgical treatments and the key to maximizing treatment outcomes for any regenerative therapy is optimal needle placement. Regenerative Medicine is ever-expanding. New concepts of managing inflammation and promoting tissue healing are being developed. Once we determine the best treatment option for you, be it PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), Prolotherapy, Prolozone Therapy, Bone marrow concentrate, fat grafting, amniotic stem cells or a combination of modalities, we can perform the procedure in our office on the same day. The injections are performed using a small needle, cold spray and local anesthesia. To ensure optimal needle placement and maximize treatment outcomes, all regenerative therapies are performed at the Barr Center under image guidance using either ultrasound or x-ray. The entire process can take as little as 60 minutes.
