CBD for Pain Relief – Benefits and Side Effects.

CBD has become increasingly popular in the healthcare community, and for good reason.

CBD oil for pain relief offers a safe, non-addictive alternative to opiates for those suffering from chronic pain. CBD is available in oral/sublingual and topical forms and we are happy to assess your condition and make recommendations specific to you.

The use of CBD can help calm the nervous system, which helps reduce muscle tension, decrease anxiety, and lower inflammation.

Many people are turning away from the more traditional, addictive treatments for long term pain and are exploring the new world of CBD oil.

What is CBD oil?

CBD or cannabidiol, is one of the hundreds of phytonutrients (plant-based nutrients) found in the Cannabis Sativa hemp plant. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound – meaning it doesn’t cause the mind-altering ‘high’ that is usually associated with marijuana.

Unlike CBD oils, marijuana contains a lot more THC, which is the psychoactive component in other cannabis products.

The legality of CBD oil depends on the ratio of CBD to THC in the oil. Since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD oil containing less than 0.3% THC is completely legal to use to aid with pain, sleep, anxiety, inflammation and more…

Please note that if you are drug tested for any reason then please only take the isolate CBD and not the full spectrum as even though the dose of the THC is very low it will show a + THC level on urine drug tests.

How does CBD oil for pain relief work?

In light of the opioid crisis, many people are turning to CBD as their pain relief of choice.

But exactly how does CBD work?

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains a wide range of cannabinoids that each have their own specific medicinal effect when ingested or consumed. When all these components work together, they can create a positive synergistic effect in the body. Isolate products contain most of these same components minus the THC.

Apart from the various cannabinoids, CBD oil also contains vitamins, minerals like zinc and calcium, 20 different amino acids, Omega 3 fatty acids, proteins, fiber terpenes, chlorophyll and more.

CBD oil combines these components to help treat various ailments of the human body both mentally and physically. It is generally understood that humans and animals have an endocannabinoid system mainly localized in the brain, gut and skin. When humans and animals are healthy, then they produce their own cannabinoids but when diets are poor and sleep habits and self-care are lacking and the system gets out of balance then an endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome can occur. Some people are genetically susceptible to this happening. Genetic testing is now available to assess for this. It is possible that this could explain why some people derive a greater effect from CBD than others. Some studies suggest that Fibromyalgia may be in part an endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome.

What are the health benefits of CBD?

Some of the health benefits of CBD can include:

  • Helps with pain relief
  • Reduces inflammation and helps with autoimmunity
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Helps with PTSD
  • Helps with addiction
  • Reduces insomnia
  • Can help reduce epileptic seizures
  • May help neurodegenerative disorders
  • Muscle pain relief

There are many reported benefits of using CBD and you should consult your provider if you’re curious whether CBD will help your pain.

What are the side effects of using CBD oil for pain relief?

CBD could alter your body’s ability to metabolize other types of drugs as it is an inhibitor of the Cytochrome P450 system which is a group of enzymes located in the liver. If you take medication that needs to be metabolized by CYP450 enzymes, then you should proceed with caution when taking CBD oil. Please use caution when taking blood thinners and drugs for heart arrhythmias. CBD products can affect how other pharmaceutical drugs are metabolized as well. Because CBD can thin your blood you will need to stop it 10-14 days prior to surgeries and other procedures.

If you’re new to CBD, you might start with a low dose and monitor your response then after one week you can increase your dose titrating to effect. Dosing card guidelines based on body weight are also available. It might also be a good idea to start with an isolate instead of full spectrum CBD as it contains no THC. Consult your provider if you have any immediate concerns about potential drug interactions. One helpful hint about CBD and potential drug interactions is that if you take medication that interacts with grapefruit then you should use caution taking oral CBD products. Drug interactions are less of an issue with the topical CBD salves and creams than with the oral/sublingual forms.

Some side effects of CBD may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Dizziness

But, just like taking other pain medication, each person is unique and will experience different results from taking CBD oil.

How to use CBD oil.

When storing your CBD oil, you want to keep it in a dark, cool place where it won’t be exposed to heat or sunlight.

The average dose our 600 mg/1200 mg of CBD oil for a person weighing 150 pounds is one dropper or 1 ml a day but your actual dose should be adjusted depending on your body weight. The equivalent dose of our more concentrated CBD oil 2500 mg/ 5000 mg is 3-4 drops a day. CBD dosing cards based on body weight are readily available for both concentrations. CBD tinctures can be taken as one dose at night time or split into half a dose in the morning and in the evening.

It’s recommended that you sit upright and drop the oil under your tongue. Leave it there for about 30 seconds before swishing it around your mouth and then swallowing. Since our CBD tinctures contain no flavorings or other additives it has what is best described as an “earthy taste”.

Taken sublingually, the effects of CBD tinctures take about 30 minutes to kick in and it lasts for 8 hours or so. Due to well recognized health concerns it is not advised to vape CBD.

If you experience any difficulty taking CBD oil then discontinue immediately and let your provider know.
